Generator and Generator Protection

To effectively protect generators against internal and external faults, a multitude of protection devices is required. The main protection is provided by a generator differential protection device, which detects faults such as short-circuit, double line-to-ground fault, short circuits in the windings or individual windings. The LN training system, "Generator Differential Protection" presented here is only a part of the systems available dealing with the subject of generator protection. In the LN training system, "Generator Differential Protection", the protection relay is connected via a current transformer, as is usual in practice. A 1kW three-phase machine with smooth-core rotor, is used as a generator. A DC dynamometer provides the drive.
The protection relay used here, is a digital type and the parameters can be set by means of the controls on the front panel, or with the appropriate software (optional).
